LALPUR EYE HOSPITAL
LALPUR, DIST. PURULIA
Rotary Club of Purulia over the years has earned a reputation among the people as “Saviour of Eyes”. Working towards eradicating Avoidable Blindness, Rotary Club of Purulia started its first permanent project, ROTARY CLUB OF PURULIA SERVICE CENTRE (formerly ROTARY SERVICE CENTER) in the year 1982. This charitable eye clinic has turned out to be a boon for this rural and economically backward district of Purulia having served over 5 lakh patients. There are still many more people in the interior rural areas, who do not have access to good eye care facilities and need medical treatment as early as possible. Opportunity to serve is there, one only has to have the will to serve. Not forgoing any such opportunity to serve and make a difference in the lives of the multitudes, a proposal to develop another eye hospital in a rural set up was envisaged. A target has been set to perform 7,000 surgeries in the existing hospital and 10,000 surgeries in the new hospital.
ROTARY CLUB OF PURULIA, drawing from its rich experience of successfully running an eye hospital in Purulia for the last 28 years, now wishes to expand its services and take quality eye care facilities virtually to every door-step, especially to the rural masses. Inspired by a vision & mission to eradicate Avoidable Blindness from Purulia district, it envisaged the construction and development of an ADVANCED CENTRE for COMPREHENSIVE EYE CARE in the rural background. To this effect land has already been purchased. The foundation stone laying ceremony and the inaugural function was held on 25th February 2006. Later on a single storey building was constructed for the purpose of OPD, which was started from August 2007. Doctors from Rotary Club of Purulia Service Centre visited the clinic four days a week. With the time, the single storey building has been converted into a double storey with the facilities of Operation Theatre and ward for inpatients (10 per day). The Inpatient Service started from 12th June 2009. The Operation Theatre was inaugurated by Swami Nirbananda Maharaj. The hospital has been connected with the base hospital with Video Conferencing (Tele-Ophthalmology) system.
The These have been done with an objective to :
“Reach out to deeper and interior rural pockets, providing the much needed eye care facilities to those who cannot afford them.”
But still there are several types of surgeries and treatment (Retinal, Glaucoma etc.) to be introduced other than IOL and minor surgeries. Not only this but also the building should be extended to provide beds for more inpatients and few more instruments (A-Scan, B-Scan, Fundus camera, Auto-refractometer etc.) are to be purchased for providing modern facilities as well.
